The King and Queen will be returning to the North East this April as part of Durham Cathedral’s Easter Celebrations.
The couple will be attending the Royal Maundy, a religious service which takes place the Thursday before Easter Sunday, on 17 April 2025.
This year’s Royal Maundy will be the King’s third as a reigning monarch. During the ceremony he will present specially minted Maudy Money to 76 men and 76 women from the local community to thank them for their contributions to society.
The Very Revd Dr Philip Plyming, Dean of Durham said: “We are both honoured and delighted that The King and Queen are coming to Durham for this year’s Royal Maundy Service.
All of us at Durham Cathedral look forward to welcoming them and being part of this special celebration of volunteering in the local community”.
During the service he will also express his gratitude for those who volunteer within the community.
Mark Jackson, Durham County Council’s head of transport and contract services, said: “The last Royal Maundy Service at Durham Cathedral took place almost 60 years ago, so this month’s visit by The King and Queen promises to be a really special occasion.
“We are, therefore, expecting a lot of people in the city on the day of the visit, so would encourage people to plan ahead and allow plenty of time in order to make the most of the day.”
Chief Inspector Stephanie Bird, of Durham Constabulary said: “We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to our wonderful city.
“Our officers will be on patrol throughout the event. It will be extremely busy so please plan your visit if you can. Please follow the directions and advice of our officers to help us keep everyone safe.
“We are assisting Durham Cathedral and our partners at Durham County Council to ensure everyone attending has an enjoyable day.”
In 2023, the celebrations took place in York. In February, the royal couple visited the city of Middlesbrough, which was the first visit of a reigning monarch in over 30 years.
