A dramatic political defection in Sunderland has taken a deeply personal turn after a source revealed that a senior councillor’s husband was unaware of her decision to quit Labour.
Graeme Miller, a prominent Labour had not been informed in advance of Fiona’s defection, according to the source.
The couple reportedly arrived together as Labour councillors, but following the announcement were seen sitting on opposite sides of the chamber, an unusual and striking moment noted by those present.
Fiona Miller confirmed the claim when contacted, shortly after announcing during a full council meeting that she was resigning from the Labour Party to join the Green Party of England and Wales.
Ms. Miller said: “Graeme never knew! He did comment on the green I was wearing, especially at weekends!
“I will not disclose the full facts, but I am feeling relieved and grateful that I have moved. I cannot lie on a doorstep! That’s a reason that I have had to live with this for nearly two years!
“Imposing a leader by the NEC and Labour North! I could not do anything for the devastation it brought my family; he nearly killed my husband.
“I feel that I am allowed,” she added.
Councillor Graeme Miller served as leader of Sunderland City Council for six years before stepping down in 2024 following a reselection challenge within the local Labour Party under the leadership of Keir Starmer.
Richard Bradley, Secretary of Sunderland Green Party and local election candidate for the Tunstall and Humbledon Ward, said:
“We are delighted to welcome Fiona. She has been an excellent Councillor for her residents and we hope she will be elected for another 3 years. Her decision proves that the ‘politics of old’ is failing.
“The Green Party is now the natural home for those dedicated to social justice, local democracy, and the environment.”
“Only the Green Party can stop Reform.
“We are fielding Green candidates in every ward in this election, providing all residents with the opportunity to challenge the status quo.”
Councillor Graeme Miller and the Labour group are yet to comment at the time of publication.

The latest developments now place both councillors on opposing political benches, marking a rare and highly visible split at the heart of the city’s political landscape.
While political defections are not uncommon, the circumstances surrounding this, combining party division with a personal relationship, have made it particularly striking.
Councillor Miller, however, remains firm in her decision.
